Dear students! Welcome to the Riga Graduate School of Law!
You have left your previous schools where you have spent a lot of time, made wonderful friendships and I believe you will always be welcome back. From now on, however, RGSL will be your new academic home. You have come to RGSL for what is sure to be a transformative and life-changing new chapter in your life.
I know that many of you are anxious about your studies and how demanding the coming academic year will be. Well, I can assure you that it will be challenging. There is a big difference between school and university, between learning and studying. Studying means knocking on doors, seeking knowledge and asking yourself questions when the lecture is over. It is not the same as high school, in fact you will see that it is a completely different way of developing yourself. Here, discipline is more important, you will be responsible for your studies and for organising your life; developing habits and building a routine; planning ahead; prioritising your studies properly, etc.
At RGSL – starting now, and continuing for three years – you will deeply engage in complex interdisciplinary problems that intentionally interconnect legal systems from East and West. You will become a truly global citizen. New worlds will open up to you as you open up to the world.
I would also like to tell you that RGSL's curriculum is one of the most thoughtful and interdisciplinary in the EU. Our teaching staff are internationally recognised academics and professionals of the highest calibre. They will challenge you, encourage you, amaze you and help you develop in countless ways.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasise that we are living in an age in which artificial intelligence is transforming our society and the way we used to live. In this age we see that self-discipline is becoming more and more important and we need to take care of our natural intelligence so that the artificial one does not deceive us. And this is what RGSL offers you!
Good luck with your studies!
Dr. Aleksandrs Potaičuks, Director of Bachelor programmes of Riga Graduate School of Law
