We are happy to announce that Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) Constitutional Assembly has elected Dr. Laura Ratniece as the new Rector of RGSL. Dr. Ratniece will start her new duties on 1 August 2024.
Dr. Ratniece has a PhD degree in law from the University of Copenhagen, a Masters degree (LL.M.) with merit in international and European law from Riga Graduate School of Law, and a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Latvia. In addition, she has obtained a Masters degree (MA) cum laude in Education (Educational Technology) at the University of Tartu. She has been an assistant professor at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Law, and an assistant professor and director of Bachelor programmes at Riga Graduate School of Law.
“Laura combines a brilliant international profile with knowledge of the local situation and the Latvian language, which is crucial for the development of RGSL. She also has both academic and academic management skills, which complement her vision on the development of RGSL in accordance with its strategic development plan”, says Professor George Ulrich, RGSL Board member, former Rector and current Academic Director of the Global Campus of Human Rights, an international network for education, training and research in human rights and democratisation mainly funded by the EU.
“I am delighted to return to Riga Graduate School of Law and will do my utmost to ensure that the study and research opportunities offered by RGSL allow its students, faculty, and alumni to reach their highest aspirations in their professional and academic careers,” says Dr. Ratniece, the new Rector of RGSL.
Dr. Ratniece's main research areas are the CISG, its interpretation, and language-related issues. She also researches issues related to legal research methodology and issues related to higher education, particularly legal education.
Dr. Ratniece speaks Latvian, English and Dutch.
