On 16 November 2019 the Rector of Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) Dr. Pietro Sullo presented his book “Beyond Genocide: Transitional Justice and Gacaca Courts in Rwanda. The Search for Truth, Justice and Reconciliation” at Bookcity, one of the main cultural events organized by the city of Milan.
Dr. Sullo participated in a panel discussion focused on the 25 anniversary of the Rwandan genocide together with historians, lawyers, journalists including Michele Achilli, Simona Berhe, Luca Jourdan, Giulia Lami and Daniele Scaglione. The discussion focused in particular on the approach adopted to deal with the legacy of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, which include both retributive mechanisms such as the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the community-based gacaca courts. Combining both legal and empirical research, the book of Dr. Sullo explores the statutory aspects and practice of Rwandan gacaca courts (inkiko gacaca), the centrepiece of Rwanda's post-genocide transitional justice system, assessing their contribution to truth, justice and reconciliation.
