From 9 to 12 December, RGSL Lecturer and Deputy Chairperson of the Compensation Commission for Soviet Damage (1940-1991), Ieva Miļūna, together with the Chairman of the Compensation Commission for Soviet Damage (1940-1991), Leading researcher of Vidzeme higher education institution, Dr. Gatis Krūmiņš visited The Hague. The purpose of the visit was to spread knowledge about the work of the Commission as to how much it has been completed in terms of assessment of Soviet damage, as well as to look for judicial opportunities to solve this case once and for all.
The delegation met with the Ambassador of Latvia to the Netherlands, H.E. Solvita Āboltiņa, Docent of Leiden University College, Mr. Otto Spijkers.
After conversations with the legal officer of the Secretariat of the International Court of Justice and representatives of the International Criminal Court, we concluded that perhaps the best dispute solution techniques could be conciliation, mediation or arbitration. Historical justice needs to be attained so that the society in Latvia feel compensated for the past wrongdoings.
