In line with Riga Graduate School of Law’s (RGSL) mission to strengthen its role as a leading research-driven institution in the Baltic region, RGSL will hold its 4th Research Week from 14 to 18 October 2024. The intensive programme is designed to deepen students’ understanding of research while also highlighting their academic achievements at the 5th International Student Research Paper Conference on 18 October.
Research Week will begin with a special excursion to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Ieva Miļūna on 15 October, offering students the chance to explore Latvia’s involvement in international organisations. The excursion will focus on key topics such as the State’s obligations in international organisations, the daily life of diplomats, and how Latvia’s legal positions are developed. Students will meet with Katrīna Kaktiņa, Director of the Department of International Organisations and Human Rights, and Sanita Pēkale, Head of the Legal Directorate.
On 16 October, Year 2 students will benefit from a Research Paper Support Session and Y3 students from a Bachelor Thesis Support Session, both led by Dr. Aleksandrs Potaičuks. These sessions aim to provide practical guidance and feedback as students work on their research projects.
A key event on 17 October will be a lecture by Michael Grant, Baltics Regional Resident Legal Advisor from the United States Department of Justice, U.S. Embassy Riga. This will be followed by a Seminar on Case Study Resolution with Dr Aleksandrs Fillers and a Workshop on Writing an Academic Paper with Dr Nataļja Točelovska, providing essential tools for academic writing and research methodology.
The concluding event of the week will be the 5th International Student Research Paper Conference on 18 October. RGSL Rector Dr Laura Ratniece will open the conference and deliver the keynote lecture. Excellence Awards will be presented to the top students of the previous academic year, followed by a speech from Paula Lipe, an RGSL graduate of 2022, sharing her insights on the importance of research.
Students will then present their research in various thematic panels moderated by RGSL faculty. Topics include armed conflict and legal responsibility, human rights, diplomacy and politics, globalisation and finance, and Latvia’s role in international law.
