On 6 September 2016 Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) will host a public lecture on “Administrative legal decision making and the private law” presented by Professor Allan Beever. Students, academia and law professionals are invited to attend.
The public lecture will take place at the RGSL (room W42) at 13:00, it will be in English.
This lecture considers the impact of the rise of the welfare state on the understanding of the private law. It argues that a form of thinking associated with the welfare state, labelled ‘administrativism’, has had a profound and surprisingly little appreciated impact on this law. This article argues that the influence of administrativism in the private law has undermined the ability of that law to afford individuals proper respect. The lecture argues that this is one small part of the explanation for the growth in irrationalism tendencies in society, such as the popularity of political demagogues such as Donald Trump in the United States and the nihilism of various elements of the Brexit campaign in the UK.
About the lecturer:
Professor Beever is currently Professor of Law at the Auckland University of Technology. He has previously held positions at the Universities of South Australia, Ottawa, Southampton, Durham and Auckland and at the Max Plank Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg. He has written or taught in the areas of tort law, contract law, and the law of unjust enrichment, legal theory, and philosophy of law, comparative law and the philosophy of Immanuel Kant.
