The new academic year 2014/2015 at Riga Graduate School of Law begins on 2 September 2014. We wish a successful and personally rewarding year to all students, faculty members and staff!
This year 81 student will begin their first year of Bachelor programme studies, and 78 students – Masters programme studies. Overall more than 279 Bachelor and 180 Masters programme students will be studying at RGSL this year. Three Doctoral students will continue their studies in the Doctoral programme created by the joint efforts of RGSL and University of Copenhagen. RGSL has admitted 29 foreigners from 18 countries this year – Austria, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Canada, Finland, Georgia, Lithuania, Russia, South Korea, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine, USA, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe. The student community will be joined by 16 Erasmus and three Nordplus students from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.
The new academic year will begins with several adjustments in the organization of the Bachelor programme. Associate professor Dr. Inese Druviete will be the new director of the Bachelor programme, formerly headed by Peter Gjortler. The RGSL Bachelor programme „Law and Diplomacy” have been included in the study direction "Law" together with all other RGSL programmes (formerly a part of Sociology, Political Science and Anthropology study direction), as approved by the Accreditation Committee of the Ministry of Education in July. The reason for these changes is an overall increase of Law study courses in this programme. In order to increase the quality and convenience of the study process, all Bachelor programme courses were revised, and the order of elective and mandatory courses has been changed. From now on students will be taking only mandatory subjects in their first year of studies, whereas in the second and third year of studies – both mandatory and elective courses will be available.
The Masters programmes have not undergone any significant changes; however, we are proud to enrol more and more Bachelor programme graduates into our two-year Masters programmes. The increasing number of applicants confirms demand for such programmes.
This fall RGSL has announced the second call for applications for the Doctoral programme in International and European Union Law, created in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen. It is planned that current Doctoral students will be joined by two more students in January 2015. The application deadline for Doctoral studies is 24 September.
RGSL has begun the development of an entirely new advanced programme in European law and Economics for the Eastern Partnership Region and Central Asia. The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and financed by the Latvian Government within the development and cooperation framework. The objective is to provide a training programme that will be useful for relations between the European Union and its Eastern neighbourhood countries, and also to provide a distinctive element of knowledge transfer that is based on Latvian experience as a member of the European Union. Currently representatives from 15 member states have been chosen to begin their studies in RGSL. The program will conclude on December 5.
This year RGSL continues the „RGSL Excellence Award” initiative to celebrate academic excellence and foster motivational atmosphere. The initiative provides an acknowledgement of outstanding achievements and offers tuition fee waivers for students, as well as excellent secondary school graduates.
The RGSL CLUB – a communication platform for students and graduates – will continue its work to unite fellow members of the RGSL. The club organises monthly lecture series „Morning Talks” where alumni share their professional knowledge and experience, and existing students make their professional contacts. The RGSL Club offers monthly updates on possibilities of teaching, learning, starting internships, career opportunities, as well as organizing and participating in events and various activities.
We are confident that RGSL is an excellent choice for young professionals who are aiming to study in English and receive education that reaches beyond borders of disciplines, countries and traditional boundaries of hierarchy. We hope our students will not only gain knowledge, but also share their experience and participate in RGSL activities according to individual interests, thus enriching the study process and enjoying student life to its fullest!
