The new academic year 2013/ 2014 at the Riga Graduate School of Law has begun. We wish a successful and personally rewarding year to all students, faculty members and staff!
This year we have welcomed 84 new Bachelor and 83 Master students, and it is all together now more than 250 Bachelor and 130 Masters programme students at RGSL. Also the first doctoral students will start their studies in PhD programme that RGSL has recently launched in cooperation with the University of Copenhagen. 43 foreigners from 25 countries will be joining the RGSL community for the study year. Additionally 11 students of the international student exchange programme ERASMUS will be a part of the RGSL community in the first semester.
In order to guarantee the highest quality of study process as well as an enjoyable study environment at the RGSL, faculty members and staff have worked to upgrade the study programmes, to offer new motivation and excellence initiative and the new cooperation platform, and to renovate premises of RGSL.
The Bachelor programmes have been adjusted so as to allow for a better focus on the main lines of study, respectively Law, Business and Diplomacy, and to ensure a wider choice of electives for students. In the field of Diplomacy, an elective focus on Asian studies continues to be developed, and central subjects such as European Policy Making and Economic Diplomacy have become mandatory. In the field of Business, restructuring of core subjects such as Financing and Accounting will ensure a more comprehensive approach, while supporting subjects such as Mathematics and Statistics have become mandatory. Finally, all study periods now include a Law subject that is common to both lines of study, and in addition to this a wide range of electives are offered, with new areas including Tort law and Labour law. These adjustments to the Bachelor programmes ensure that all graduates will have access to the 2-year Masters programmes in law, politics and finance at RGSL.
Although the Master programmes did not undergone significant change this year, the RGSL is proud to welcome several new faculty member, for example, former diplomat of the Dutch Foreign Ministry and Ambassador, expert in public international law Tjaco Theo van den Hout and policy management and negotiation expert Markus Gastinger.
This year RGSL announced new initiative - "RGSL Excellence Award" in order to foster academic excellence and motivational atmosphere among students. The initiative is intended to award the best students and offer tuition fee waivers for distinguished students and secondary schools' graduates. Academic excellence is one of the RGSL's core values, as attested by highly qualified lecturers from all over the world, the high evaluation of study programmes, and student success in various competitions. The award is an opportunity for prospective and current students to prove themselves and to get a chance to study for free.
To provide new opportunities and to strengthen relationships, we have established the official RGSL CLUB exclusive for Alumni, faculty and students. RGSL CLUB is a tool to unite fellow members of RGSL family and enable each of us to better use the life-long education, career and social networking opportunities offered by the RGSL.
Throughout the year variety of academic events, conferences, public lectures, and extracurricular activities for students and the wider public are planned. Students are welcome to join the RGSL Student Association, student organisation "Upward Association" and students' newspaper "Lingua Franca", as well to become an RGSL Ambassador to present the school in secondary schools, exhibitions and other events.
RGSL is a top tier law school to study law, finance and business, diplomacy, political science and legal linguistic. We hope that each student will gain knowledge and skills that will serve as the basis for a successful career and further self-development.
