Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) within the Lawyers Days in Latvia on 25 April is organising annual Discussion on Current Human Rights Issues in Latvia.
This year there were two topics that were discussed in the Latvian context: recent developments in the European Court of Human Rights and minority rights.
The discussions was moderated by Dr. Ineta Ziemele, Judge in the European Court of Human Rights and RGSL Professor, and Dr. George Ulrich, RGSL Rector. Speakers included such distinguished experts as Dr. Manfred Nowak, Professor in Vienna University, former member of the UN Human Rights Committee and former UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other forms of ill treatment, Dr. Gudmundur Alfredsson, Visiting Professor in Strasbourg University, former member of the UN Sub-Commission on Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, as well as Latvian experts Dr. Mārtiņš Mits, RGSL Prorector, and Ms. Inga Reine, Representative of the Latvian Government in the International Human Rights Institutions.
The annual discussions are well known among Latvian legal practitioners, academicians, civil servants, NGOs as well as politicians. Discussion is supported by the the Soros Foundation Latvia.
