Guest lecture by Honourable Madame Justice Maria T. Linhares de Sousa on Canadian family law.
Honourable Madame Justice Maria T. Linhares de Sousa, Judge for the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, Canada, held a guest lecture at RGSL for the students of the LL.B. course “Comparative Personal, Family and Inheritance Law”. The subject matter of the lecture was introduction into Canadian family law.
The lecture reflected over thirty years of personal experience in adjudication in matrimonial matters, briefly covering all major issues in Canadian family law, be it federal or provincial competence. Canada’s mixed legal system of both common law and civil law jurisdictions offered even more unique perspectives on the topics.
The highly interesting issues that most students encountered in their lives for the first time, as well as the fascinating style in which the lecture was presented resulted in a hot discussion about matrimonial property rights, divorce conditions, comparison of marriage and other types of cohabitation, etc. Nothing can prove the success of the lecture better than the fact that with the discussion and questions that followed, the 45 minute guest event was over 90 minutes when it finally had to come to an end.
