The Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) organised the annual Discussion on Current Human Rights Issues in Latvia on 22 April, 2013.
As every year, the beginning of the discussion was devoted to the recent developments in the European Court of Human Rights that are important to Latvia. In addition to the usual programme this year RGSL offered a presentation on the possibilities of the European Council HELP programme and thematic workgroup discussions.

The Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) organised the annual Discussion on Current Human Rights Issues in Latvia. It tooke place on 22 April 2013 from 9.30-15.30, at 4k-2 Strēlnieku iela, Soros auditorium.
Participants of the discussion regarding recent developments in the European Court of Human Rights consisted of well known experts:
- Dr. Ineta Ziemele, Judge in the European Court of Human Rights and RGSL Professor
- Dr. Mārtiņš Mits, RGSL Prorector
- Mr. Jeremy McBride, Barrister from Monckton Chambers
- Kristīne Līce, Representative of theCabinet of Ministers before International Human Rights Institutions.
After discussion Tatiana Termacic, Head of Support to Human Rights National Implementation Unit in the Council of Europe, presented the possibilities of the HELP programme. The goals of this programme are to promote use of the European Convention on Human Rights in daily work of judges, lawyers, prosecutors and other applicants of the law.
This year's innovation was thematic discussion groups on issues arising from the European Court of Human Rights rulings in Latvian cases:
- Control of police actions, including operational activities
- Conflicts resulting from child abduction
- Conditions in detention facilities.
The annual discussions are well known amongst Latvian legal practitioners, academicians, civil servants, NGOs as well as politicians. Thanks to support from the Soros Foundation Latvia, admission to the discussion is free of charge.
