We are happy to invite you to a public lecture by Dr Steffen Hindelang, Professor of International Investment and Trade Law at Uppsala University, on 6 November from 16.00 to 17.30 at Riga Graduate School of Law, Strēlnieku 4 k-2, W42.
The lecture “Investor-State Dispute Settlement and EU Law: From Eastern Sugar to Achmea and Beyond” will examine the investment dispute resolution mechanism from the perspective of European Union law. It will discuss and describe the investment dispute settlement mechanism, the principle of autonomy of European Union law, its development, and its interaction with it. It will also focus on possible conflicts between European Union State aid law and investment protection law.
Dr Hindelang teaches and researches international economic law, especially international investment law, EU law, and German public law.
The lecture is organised in cooperation with the State Chancellery of Latvia. The lecture will be held in English.

Steffen Hindelang is a professor of international investment and trade law at Uppsala University in Sweden. He teaches and researches in the areas of international economic law, esp. international investment law, EU law and German public law. He is also a faculty at the University of Southern Denmark and an adjunct faculty at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technical University Berlin. He is a senior fellow at the Walter Hallstein Institute of European Constitutional Law at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and academic advisor to the International Investment Law Centre Cologne (IILCC). Previously, he was a guest professor at, among others, the University of Uppsala as a Riksbankens Jubileumsfond – Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Swedish Prize Laureate at Nagoya University, Bocconi University Milan, the University of Lausanne, the Charles University Prague, the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), and the Turkish-German University Istanbul.
Furthermore, he has advised, inter alia, European governments on investment screening regulation as well as in international investment disputes and international organisations, such as UNCTAD, on matters of reform of the current international investment law regime. He was repeatedly invited by the European Parliament’s INTA Committee to prepare studies on the evolvement of the EU Common Commercial Policy in the area of investment. He was also involved in the Achmea proceedings, in particular in the German courts, and, lately, served as EU law expert in support of the Kingdom of Spain in US Court proceedings in Novenergia, Eiser, Antin, Masdar, and others. In the Swedish Supreme Court, he acts as an expert in support of the Republic of Poland in PL Holdings.
Dr Hindelang serves at the ICSID Panel of Conciliators designated by the Federal Republic of Germany from 2019-2025.
